Expedia’s AI assistant, Romie, hinted at the promise of conversational travel but was fragmented, visually heavy, and poorly integrated into the core experience.
As Principal Designer, I led the design of an AI Agent for Hotels.com that unified shopping and servicing skills inside a single chat experience. The scope included the UX and UI, the product design, and the visual identity and positioning of the agent for the Hotels.com and Expedia apps. It started as a vision, then an MVP, and evolved into the next phase, exploring a more adaptive AI Agent framework. The vision and the MVP were a dedicated agent experience adjacent to search. Adaptive UX integrated the two into one, a search experience that can support unstructured conversational queries and context.
Vision
A company-wide design sprint set the vision: turn trip discovery and planning into a conversation.
The sprint pulled designers, researchers, and product partners across Expedia Group into the same two weeks of work. Travelers wanted something that understood their situation and helped them decide, not another search box. The UX was a dedicated agent experience, built adjacent to search. I mapped the product into search, content, navigation, and agent layers. We pulled together two main flows through the lens of Sara, our target traveler. The first focused on discovery and trip planning, and the second on narrowing and comparing options. I walked the CEO through her trip, along with the VPs, and the value was legible in a single sitting.
AI Agent
We shipped a chat MVP that unified shopping and servicing.
The MVP carried the same model: a dedicated agent experience adjacent to search. Shopping and support had always been separate products with separate teams. Bringing them into one conversation meant a traveler could plan a trip and get help with a booking without ever knowing they had crossed a line. Color, type, and motion were drawn from Hotels.com so the assistant never felt bolted on. The AI Agent mark is the signature of the chat; the sparkle does the quieter work, signaling intelligence inline.
Expedia Group’s Chief Product Officer debuted the agent on stage at EXPLORE ’25. The work was shown to partners and press, with live demo stations on the floor alongside the keynote. I art directed, creative directed, and designed the reel, working closely with a good friend who also designed it and created the motion.
Adaptive UX
The next evolution integrates search and the agent into one experience: search that can support unstructured conversational queries and context.
Each entry point is phrased for the moment it appears. Instead of sending travelers into a separate chat, the agent can answer inline. And treating it as a layer rather than a destination means the map, the property, and the conversation stay available at once.
“Congrats fellas on getting this out the door, in the app, and on the stage!”
